Absolute Smiles Teeth Whitening

Who doesn’t love a bright, beautiful, radiant smile? Teeth whitening is one of our most popular cosmetic procedures at our practice and is very simple!

What are the options?

There are 2 methods to whiten your teeth, and an initial consultation with your dentist will help determine which is right for you.

Option 1: In Chair “Zoom” whitening

For those wanting a quick, “instant” teeth whitening fix, a Zoom in chair procedure is ideal. A series of bleaching gels is applied to your teeth along with a special laser light whilst you sit comfortably in the dental chair. This procedure takes approximately 90 minutes. A take home kit is given at the end of the appointment to help you achieve the best final result.

Option 2: Take home Professional Zoom whitening kit

Our ever popular take home kit is an economical, and very effective way to whiten your smile! Dental moulds are taken of the teeth to create custom fitting “bleach trays”. The whitening solution is then used at home, wearing the bleach trays, from as little as 30 minutes a day for 7-14 days.

How successful is it?

Whitening has about a 90% success rate, however it CAN be unpredictable and results will vary from one individual to the next, depending on the level of discolouration. It’s very important to have realistic expectations from the outset – whitening will go a long way to brightening your smile but the results cannot be guaranteed. It is also important to understand that results are NOT permanent, and newly whitened teeth will fade quicker depending on lifestyle factors such as diet (red wine, tea and coffee for example), smoking and so on. This means touch ups are required to maintain your results long term.

Am I a candidate?

People with yellow-toned discolouration tend to get the best results with whitening.  Those with brown-toned discolouration don’t respond as well, and those with grey-toned discolouration often don’t respond to whitening at all. Tetracycline (antibiotic) staining cannot be bleached out of teeth and will require other cosmetic options, such as porcelain veneers.

Are there any side-effects?

The only real side effect of teeth whitening is sensitivity, which can occur during the whitening process or immediately after. However, this sensitivity is usually temporary and can often be managed easily with sensitivity-relieving toothpastes and other dental products depending on the level of discomfort.

Whether you have a special upcoming event or are simply rewarding yourself with a treat, teeth whitening can give you a great confidence boost!

Teeth whitening is not recommended in the following patients: Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, children under the age of 16, patients with untreated tooth cavities, active gum disease or receding gums, as well as active smokers.

It is important to be aware that existing white fillings and ceramic work such as crowns and veneers WILL NOT WHITEN. Only natural tooth structure can be bleached, and as such, it is important for a proper consultation to be carried out before any whitening procedure is undertaken.
